Villagers are one of the strongest resources in Minecraft: through trading you get enchanted books, diamond gear, ender pearls and cheap raw materials. This article explains every profession, the workstation block each one needs, and which villagers offer the best trades – as of 1.21.

How do villagers work?
- Profession: An unemployed villager takes a job as soon as it finds a free workstation block in range.
- Workstation block: Each profession belongs to exactly one block (e.g. lectern = librarian).
- Level: Novice → Apprentice → Journeyman → Expert → Master. Higher levels unlock better trades (the badge turns into a diamond symbol).
- Experience: Villagers gain trading XP – every buy/sell moves them closer to the next level.
- Restocking: Villagers refill sold-out trades by working at their station – max ~2× per day. No access to the block means no restock.
- Daily routine & work hours: In the morning they head to work, trade/restock during the day, and go to bed at night.
- Beds: Needed for sleeping and breeding – every villager needs a reachable bed.

The best professions
- Librarian – enchanted books, above all Mending. Unbeatable.
- Toolsmith – diamond tools for emeralds.
- Weaponsmith – enchanted diamond sword/axe.
- Armorer – a full diamond armour set.
- Farmer – a steady emerald income.
Changing professions
Don't like a trade offer? You can reset the profession – but only while the villager hasn't traded yet:
- Break the workstation block → the villager becomes unemployed again.
- Place the block again → it takes the job with freshly rolled trades.
- Repeat until the offer you want (e.g. Mending) appears.
Levelling villagers
- Every trade gives the villager experience toward the next level.
- As the level rises (novice → … → master), better/more trades unlock.
- The badge on the belt shows the rank (stone → iron → gold → emerald → diamond).
- Trades you use a lot become available again after a restock.
Building a trading hall

Ground rules for an efficient trading hall:
- Each villager in its own cell with its workstation and access to restock.
- Light it up and secure against zombies – an infected villager turns into a zombie.
- Plan for beds (sleep + breeding).
- Position villagers so you can reach all trades comfortably.
Common problems
- Villager won't take a job: no reachable workstation, no bed – or it's a Nitwit.
- Won't restock: it can't reach its workstation (path blocked).
- Prices rising: high demand on frequently bought trades – or a negative "reputation".
- Profession won't change: it has already traded → the job is locked.
FAQ
How do I get cheap Mending books? Set up a librarian and re-place the lectern until "Mending" appears. Push the price down further with the zombie-cure discount.
Can villagers breed? Yes – with enough beds and food (e.g. bread, carrots) in their inventory. Ideal for farms and trading halls.
Do villagers despawn? They don't despawn, but they can be killed or infected by zombies – so secure them well.
Conclusion
Master villager trading and you save hours of grinding: the librarian for enchantments, the smiths for diamond gear, the farmer for emerald income. On servers, a shared trading hall pays off especially well – just watch the server load.
